Martin Scorsese has shared his thoughts on Quentin Tarantino’s planned retirement after his upcoming 10th film.

Tarantino has previously said his next film, The Movie Critic, will be his final feature project so he can “go and write novels and cinema literature”.

Scorsese commented on the director’s plan during an interview with Associated Press, where he highlighted the differences between them.

“He’s a writer,” Scorsese said. “It’s a different thing. I come up with stories. I get attracted to stories through other people. All different means, different ways. And so I think it’s a different process.

“I respect writers and I wish I could. I wish I could just be in a room and create these novels, not films, novels.”

Speaking about his own longevity as a filmmaker as he promotes his 27th feature film Killers Of The Flower Moon, Scorsese explained that he’s still “curious” about the artform.

“I’m curious about everything still,” he added. “That’s one of the things. If I’m curious about something I think I’ll find a way. If I hold out and hold up, I’ll find a way to try to make something of it on film, but I have to be curious about the subject.

“My curiosity is still there. I couldn’t speak for Quentin Tarantino or others who are able to create this work in their world.”

Scorsese recently encouraged young filmmakers to “reinvent” the cinema landscape during a Screen Talk at the BFI London Film Festival.

“I honestly think it’s thrown back now on all of you,” the director said. “I really mean this – I don’t know where cinema is going to go. Why does it have to be the same as it was for the past 90-100 years? It doesn’t. Do we prefer cinema from the last 90-100 years? I do, but I’m old.”

He added: “You’re all in the process of a period of reinventing it. It’s quite an extraordinary time and a lot of it is due to technology.”
