‘Gavin And Stacey’ Christmas finale trailer focuses on mysterious fishing trip

‘Gavin And Stacey’ cast

The Gavin And Stacey finale is one of the most eagerly-anticipated moments of the TV calendar this year, and the official trailer is out now – watch it below.

It’s been five years since the last episode of the iconic sitcom – the 2019 Christmas special – which ended in a cliffhanger after Nessa, played by Ruth Jones, proposed to Smithy (James Corden).

The trailer doesn’t reveal whether the pair, who share son Neil the Baby (Oscar Hartland) are now married, with viewers needing to wait until Christmas Day to find out what happened in the years since the last episode.

However, it teases a potential explanation of what happened between Uncle Bryn (Rob Brydon) and his nephew, Jason (Robert Wilfort), on their infamous fishing trip – one of the biggest mysteries in the show. Gwen (Melanie Walters) confronts her brother-in-law and son over the incident, saying: “30 years ago, you two went on a fishing trip that almost tore this family apart!”

The trailer – like many of the show’s episodes – with a phone call between Gavin (Mathew Horne) and Stacey (Joanna Page), who are looking forward to a weekend together with family, as Bryn prepares to drive the Welsh side of the family over to Essex, where Gavin’s parents Mick (Larry Lamb) and Pam (Alison Steadman) live.

The marriage between Pam and Mick’s friends, Pete (Adrian Scarborough) and Dawn (Julia Davis), appears as volatile as ever, with Dawn calling Pete a “despicable little rat.” Meanwhile, Nessa gets to showcase her surprising harmonica skills.

Last week, eagle-eyed fans unable to wait for the official trailer found a short clip from the upcoming finale hidden at the end of the 2019 special on BBC iPlayer. In the footage, Nessa is back in Barry Island and transporting tourists around.

Speaking to The Big Issue recently, Jones and Corden – who co-wrote the series together – hinted that the pair may not end up together in the finale. Jones said, “I keep telling people this finale might not be what you are expecting, and I guarantee we will definitely not be coming back.”

Corden added: “What people are going to see on Christmas Day is the culmination of a 20-year love story, which hopefully shows, if nothing else, that love is complicated and messy and for everyone.”

A synopsis for the finale reads: “In Barry, Bryn’s packing the Picasso in readiness for a trip to Essex; Stacey and Gavin are looking for new ways to spice up their seventeen-year marriage and Gwen is behaving most strangely. Nessa’s started a new business venture and Neil the Baby’s about to begin an apprenticeship with his dad.

“Over in Billericay Pam is stressing out at the prospect of playing hostess, not helped by a newly retired Mick practising his golf swings in the living room and there have been more ups and downs in Pete and Dawn’s relationship.”

Reports of the finale were first leaked in February, before Jones and Corden officially confirmed the news in May. It was filmed across September and October, and will air at 9pm on Christmas Day on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
