The Substance star Demi Moore’s emotional acceptance speech at this year’s Golden Globes has drawn praise from viewers online, who have called it “heartfelt” and “inspiring”.
Moore won Best Female Actor In A Film — Musical or Comedy for her performance as a fading celebrity who turns to a black market drug known as The Substance in order to produce a young version of herself.
Stepping on to the podium, she began “I’ve been doing this a long time, like over 45 years, and this is the first time I’ve ever won anything as an actor”. She then explained her journey to this point, recalling that “30 years ago, I had a producer tell me that I was a “popcorn actress” and, at that time, I made that mean that this (award) wasn’t something that I was allowed to have. That I could do movies that were successful, that made a lot of money, but that I couldn’t be acknowledged, and I bought in and I believed that”
“And that corroded me over time, to the point where I thought, a few years ago, that maybe this was it. Maybe I was complete. Maybe I would—I’d done what I was supposed to do. As I was at kind of a low point, I had this magical, bold, courageous, out-of-the-box, absolutely bonkers script come across my desk called The Substance. And the universe told me that you’re not done”.
Moore concluded “In those moments when we don’t think we’re smart enough or pretty enough, or skinny enough or successful enough, or basically just not enough. I had a woman say to me, ‘Just know, you will never be enough. But you can know the value of your worth if you just put down the measuring stick.’”
Online, fans enthusiastically responded to her speech. One X user tweeted “Such a heartfelt speech from an amazing woman. I just know that her career will skyrocket after this”. Others added that it was an “Inspiring speech I needed to hear”, and Moore deserved “all the awards”.

The Substance was one of the breakout hits of 2024. In NME’s review, Nick Levine described it as “horrifying in the moment and gnawingly haunting when you process it fully: a sickening satire of society’s obsession with youth and beauty”. Recently, Moore linked The US election to the film’s themes, saying “America is built on puritans, religious fanatics and criminals”.
