The first trailer for the new Wes Anderson film, The Phoenician Scheme, has been released and starts with a bang.
Benicio del Toro is introduced as Zsa-zsa Korda, described as “international businessman, maverick in the fields of armament and aviation, among the richest men in Europe”.
He emerges from a plane crash bloodied and bruised before telling his daughter Liesl (Mia Threapleton), a nun, that she is the sole heir to his fortune ahead of an important infrastructure enterprise.
We then meet the various people trying to disrupt his plans, including what Korda describes as “terrorists from out of town”. Richard Ayoade appears as a militant apparently leading the aggression against Korda, while Scarlett Johannson, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Tom Hanks all feature as his apparent allies or collaborators.
The star-studded preview that includes many previous Anderson regulars, including Jeffrey Wright, Bryan Cranston, and Mathieu Amalric.
While Anderson has never shied away from violence in his work, fans may be surprised at the gunfire and explosions packed into the trailer, which lasts just under two and a half minutes. Among other highlights are Cumberbatch with unusual beard and eyebrow prosthetics; Michael Cera sporting a comedic European accent; and Hanks demonstrating his basketball skills.
It’s the director’s 13th film in over 30 years, having broken through with the 1994 short Bottle Rocket (later made into a feature), as well as defining his unique style with hits like Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, and The Grand Budapest Hotel.
The Phoenician Scheme is in UK cinemas from May 23.
Recently, the filmmaker talked about how it “took time” for the crew of 2009’s The Fantastic Mr Fox to “trust” his approach. “My ideas for how to go about making the movie were probably unconventional in ways I didn’t realise,” he said, “and so I ended up doing a lot of things that made it a lot more difficult.”
