Sarah Michelle Gellar has paid tribute to her Buffy The Vampire Slayer co-star Nicholas Brendon, who has died aged 54.
The news of Brendon’s passing was shared on Friday (March 20), with the actor’s family confirming that he died in his sleep of natural causes.
Brendon played the non-supernatural loveable sidekick Xander Harris in all seven seasons of the beloved ‘90s show opposite Gellar, and was also known for his work in Criminal Minds, Kitchen Confidential and Demon Island.
Gellar has written a personal tribute to Brendon on Instagram, in which she quotes a Buffy season seven scene between Xander and Dawn, played by Michelle Trachtenberg, who also died last year at the age of 39.
“‘They’ll never know how tough it is to be the one who isn’t chosen. To live so near to the spotlight, and never step in it. But I know. I see more than anybody realizes, because nobody’s watching me’,” she wrote.
In a personal comment at the end of the post, which included a photo of the two of them together, she added: “I saw you Nicky. I know you are at peace, in that big rocking chair in the sky.”
Other Buffy co-stars to pay tribute included Alyson Hannigan, who played Xander’s best friend Willow. She wrote: “My Sweet Nicky, thank you for years of laughter, love and Dodgers. I will think of you every time I see a rocking chair. I love you. RIP”
Emma Caulfield, who played Xander’s formerly demonic ex-fiancée Anya, shared a video of Brendon discussing their duet ‘I’ll Never Tell’ from the sixth season’s infamous musical episode, ‘Once More, With Feeling’.
“My heart is heavy,” she wrote on her Instagram Story. “I can’t put into words just how this has hit me. Let this clip of us giving it our all be a placeholder. Rest Nicky. Rest. I love you.”
In 2023, Brendon revealed he had suffered a heart attack and had been diagnosed with a congenital heart defect. He also had Cauda Equina syndrome – a neurological condition caused by compression of the nerve roots at the base of the spine – which required several spinal surgeries.
