Neil Young has shared the first trailer for his forthcoming documentary Coastal.
The project was shot and directed by filmmaker and Young’s wife Daryl Hannah, and will be screened in cinemas for one night only worldwide on April 17. You can purchase tickets here.
It is a personal, behind-the-scenes documentary which followed Young during his 2023 tour dates and gives “an up-close and intimate view into the life of one of history’s most iconic songwriters and musicians”. You can view the trailer below.
“With Coastal I wanted to highlight Neil’s authenticity, openness and vulnerability as a person, musician and performer,” Hannah said in a statement. “He is as pure and honest as they come. Deeply devoted to his musical muse, which at times presented a challenge in capturing the songs, as we never knew what he might play or what instruments he’d pick up next.
“But what we were able to capture has an unpretentious magic that reveals the truth, sentiment and emotions in these hidden gems as well as a close up look at a performer who plays from the heart with a total lack of pretence.”
To accompany the film, a live soundtrack was also recently announced for release on April 18. It can be pre-ordered here.
Titled ‘Coastal: The Soundtrack’, it includes 11 songs from across the singer-songwriter’s 60-year career – all of which were recorded live at the live shows and include hits like ‘I Am A Child’ and ‘Vampire Blues’.
Later this summer, the Canadian singer-songwriter is set to return to the UK and Europe as part of his ‘Love Earth’ world tour with the Chrome Hearts.
This includes a bill-topping set at Glastonbury Festival in late June, and a headline slot at BST Hyde Park the following month. For the latter, he’ll be joined by Yusuf / Cat Stevens and Van Morrison, with further support acts to be confirmed at a later date. Visit here for tickets.
As well as the live shows, Young recently released his first track with his live band The Chrome Hearts, ‘Big Change’. He has since given an update on his debut album with the group, explaining that he hoped to release it in April ahead of a summer tour.
“It is in mastering now to make the vinyl, CD and digital copies,” Neil Young wrote. “I am very happy and relieved to have this done in the short time it took. The album art has been completed and handed in with Jenice Heo. I am working on the lyric sheets now, hoping to hand-write the words and get them in, in time…”
Earlier this week, it was also reported that the folk icon is planning to play a free concert in Ukraine ahead of his upcoming European summer tour, but details around this remain sparse.
