A mention of US President Donald Trump on the most recent episode of The White Lotus is dividing viewers on social media.
In the latest episode, things got political when Leslie Bibb’s character, Kate, revealed she voted for Trump. During a dinner scene, Kate’s friends, Jaclyn (Michelle Monaghan) and Laurie (Carrie Coon), discuss religion and politics.
Eventually, they were surprised to learn that Kate, who attends church in Austin, Texas, voted for Trump. This revelation led to the old friends realising they are not as close as they might have thought.
As with many fascinating plotlines, people on either side of the political divide saw the scene through their own prism of experience. Right Wing viewers viewed it as a satire on the fickle nature of the left, while Left Wing fans saw it as a mockery of the President’s voter base.
One wrote: “The Left thinks (the scene is) making fun of her, or demonizing her, but I think it’s exactly the opposite. He’s making fun of the people who would cut off friendships because of Trump.”. Another added: “It’s a very subtle dig at coastal elites who assume they don’t know anyone who goes to church and voted for Trump”.

Conversely, some fans thought the show was slamming Trump as those who voted for him. “republicans and trump getting their whacks tonight on white lotus that was funny” shared one, while another wrote: “I love that white lotus wrote an anti trump dialogue into this episode..it’s so fitting”.

One watcher didn’t know what the show was trying to say, but felt the inclusion of real life politics tainted the experience. “Not sure if the intent was to show how intolerant people on the Left are, or if they’re ultimately going to end up shitting on Trump,” they said, before adding: “people watch a show because they’re trying to step away from the real stuff for a bit. Inserting a political theme immediately felt like it ruined the show. It ends up feeling like propaganda, I’m done watching it”.

The success of The White Lotus season three has led to speculation as to whether show favourite Jennifer Coolidge would be returning. The actor shut down the rumours, saying: “They don’t need me”.
