Adam Sandler has promised to make at least 50 more movies before retiring from the film industry.
In a characteristically light-hearted speech at AARP’s Movies for Grownups Awards, which aims to combat ageism in the entertainment world by celebrating the work of creatives over 50, the Jay Kelly actor said that several people in his life told him receiving the award meant he was officially considered old now. But, he explained, “it’s not because of this award – I got ten other reasons that let you know why.”
He wheeled through all the humorous reasons he felt old – not limited to needing to take “a Viagra just to take a piss” and sending texts so large they could be read by “anyone with a window seat on a Delta flight” – for the crowd at the Beverly Wilshire in Beverly Hills on Saturday (January 10), per Variety.
“When I received the Academy Award screeners app, even though I press play on 44 different movies, I can only stay awake for a combined total of eight minutes,” he continued, to raucous laughter.
“To every one of you out there who are getting all the accolades, I must say I loved the first 30 seconds.”
He went on to thank his family for supporting his comedy after all these years, saying: “Thank you to my lovely wife for staying with me even though no part of my body is where it used to be,” sending additional thanks to his children “for not laughing every time I walk down the hallway shirtless”.
To close out, the actor thanked all the attendees in the room, including his co-star George Clooney, Kathy Bates, Noah Wyle, Laura Dern and more. “I promise to every one of you here tonight, I will make at least 50 more movies before I am dead. And at least 25 of them will be good.”
Before Sandler took the stage, his longtime friend Henry Winkler introduced him, saying that while he had defined a generation with comedic turns in films like 50 First Dates, The Wedding Singer and Happy Gilmore, “under that layer of comedy, is this wonderful, sincere dramatic actor”, nodding to his roles like Uncut Gems and Jay Kelly.
“All the while, this man has never changed his Hawaiian shirt and sport shorts,” Winkler laughed.
NME recently sat down with Clooney and Sandler, who each shared the one album they always return to.
Speaking about his love of Hole’s 1994 release ‘Live Through This’, Sandler said: “I remember I was on tour. I was doing standup and uh that album just came out and I was in my car a lot and I listened to the track one and I was like, ‘Ooh, that was Nasty’. Track two, I was like, ‘two for two.’ And then I just said, ‘I guess this whole album is going to be great.’”
